Mastering the Summer Culture of Japan

Mastering the Summer Culture of Japan

When I think of Summer time in Japan I think of its numerous summer festivals, firework shows and traditional summer robes called, “yukata(浴衣) ”. This is the best time to get up-close and personal with Japanese culture. I love its traditional drum sound, the energy and passion from the people who are involved in each unique local festival. In some festivals they compete which team of drummers or Awaodori dancers were better. So their energy level is so high and intense which makes me feel hotter!

Summer in Tokyo is generally very hard because it’s usually very hot and humid… it’s easy to imagine what it’s like if I bring a hot Yoga studio into the picture…but, not just for 90 minutes…. Around the clock! So how do Japanese keep their crime rates so low? Japanese traditional ways of keeping us calm and cool is to eat some cold noodles and shaved ice with toppings ( か き氷) but a pro would add wind chime (風鈴) into the mix and wearing yukata all at once. Mmmm, that picture looks perfect in my mind!

I know that many traditional events have been cancelled for this year because it has been a special year. But that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the rest of the summer. The good news is, in Japan you don’t really need a permit to do small hand held types of fireworks in open areas like parks, open fields etc. And many drug stores and grocery stores sell fireworks during summer (example of how the package looks is attached in a picture for your reference ).

I have listed up some shaved ice shops in Tokyo below…. Now you can be the king and queen of Summer in Tokyo!

  • 1. ICE MONSTER Omote-Sando 6 Chome-35-6 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001
  • 2. Sebastian 7-15 Kamiyamacho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0047
  • 3. SALON GINZA SABOU 5 Chome−2-1, Basement 2nd floor, Chuo-ku, Ginza, Tokyo 104-0061

Checked all of them on the list?

  • Yukata
  • Wind Chime
  • A pack of fireworks
  • (lighter)… and a bucket of water to take the firework’s burned sticks home
  • Try a cold soba noodles
  • Try shaved ice shop
  • (learned to dance Awaodori like a pro…. To prepare for 2021 summer festivals)
  • Keeping calm and cool like a zen pro.

…Then I think now you’re ready to leave my nest and go out there and enjoy your Tokyo life! Thanks for stopping by. I’ll see you again next time 🙂
