Where Can I Take a PCR Test in Tokyo?

Wondering where you can take a PCR test? Keep reading to find out! This guide will help you understand what a PCR test is, why you need one, and options for getting one in Tokyo.

What is a PCR Test?

PCR test is one of the most effective ways to detect COVID-19. It works by looking at the genetic material, RNA, that is specific to the SARS-CoV-2 strain.

Since it is looking at RNA and not any specific symptoms or antibodies, it is the most accurate option. PCR tests can detect the virus before you show any symptoms, and the results will show positive within just a few days of being infected.

Taking the test is simple and convenient, so you can take it in your car, a hospital, or a clinic. It involves using a swab to collect material from your nose. The swab will be sealed in a tube and sent off to a lab for testing!

The timeframe for getting your results is usually 2-3 days, but the demand can make a difference. In other words, you can get your test back in as little as 24 hours, or after a week if there is a big backlog.

Why Do you Need a PCR Test?

So, why would you need a PCR test?

When you travel, some destinations and airlines require a negative COVID-19 test before you can proceed. In most cases, the results must be from within 72 hours – but check with your flight to make sure you have everything you need.

You will likely need to provide a negative test certificate for your trip, so check out some of the testing locations in the next section!

 Testing Locations

There are many places you can take a PCR test in Tokyo. These clinics and testing centers should also be able to provide any certificates you need before continuing your travels.

It is important to note that these venues will only conduct a PCR test if you do not have signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Similarly, health insurance will not cover the cost of the test, so you will have to pay for it out of pocket.

Most of the locations also require an appointment, so try to call ahead to get one scheduled.
